STORRS, Conn. (April 17) - The University of Connecticut softball team extended its winning streak to eight games after defeating interstate rival Central Connecticut, 5-1, 10-0, in a non-league doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the UConn Softball Field in Storrs, Conn.
In game one, both teams would go scoreless in the first one and a half innings of play. UConn started the march to the plate on sophomore Elisa Brinkworth's (Amherst, N.Y.) RBI double that brought in seniors Abbie Link (Chalfont, Pa.) and Megan Biddle (Bear, Del.) to put UConn up 2-0. The Huskies stretched their lead to 4-0 after batting in two consecutive one-run innings and taking advantage of three CCSU errors.
The Blue Devils found a score in the top of the seventh for a late inning attack, but that would not be enough as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Huskies. Sophomore lefty Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, Maine) earned the win, pitching a complete game with two strikeouts and giving up only one earned run.
In the second half of the series, four UConn runs were tallied in the early going with the bases loaded and RBI singles hit into play by senior co-captain Mandy Simjian (Wallingford, Conn.) and designated player Megan Biddle. This allowed UConn to go through its entire batting lineup in the same frame. Abbie Link would later score on a wild pitch and junior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, Mass.) brought in an RBI after advancing on a fielder's choice.
Already up 4-0, Connecticut racked up a six-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to end the game in five. Senior co-captain Sarah Sandford (Carlsbad, N.M.) came in to pinch hit for Girolamo and drove in the insurance run for the Huskies' eventual 10-0 shutout. Senior shortstop Jessica Yanosy (Milford, Conn.) went 4-for-8 in both games with one RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore leftfielder Nicole Dubovik (Coral Springs, Fla.) hit 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Sophomore pitcher Barb Cook (Conklin, N.Y.) made a return to the mound, after being sidelined with a concussion against Syracuse on April 14, to record six strikeouts in the five-inning shutout. She improves her win-loss record to 7-9.
Connecticut jumps to 17-18 overall, while CCSU falls to 5-17. With the pair of wins, the Huskies also extend their all-time series record versus Central Connecticut to 43-5.
UConn will next host its first doubleheader ever against Quinnipiac on Thursday, April 19 at 3 p.m. in Storrs.
