American Athletic Conference Release
STORRS, Conn. – Following an impressive week at the plate, which included a three-run homer on Saturday, senior infielder Valerie Sadowl has been named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week – her first time earning the honor.
Sadowl (Horsham, Pa.) hit .429 in three games last week against Central Connecticut State and East Carolina. She was 3-for-7 at the dish with a home run, a double, six RBI, two runs and three walks. Entering the week, she had one RBI on the season.
In a tied game with the Pirates on Saturday, Sadowl blasted a three-run homer to right-center field to give the Huskies a permanent 8-5 lead. It was her first home run since her sophomore season in 2014. She also added a double in the game, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI.
On Sunday, Sadowl chipped in two more RBI in productive groundouts, helping UConn to a 15-7 win over the Pirates in six innings. In a pinch-hitting spot on Wednesday, Sadowl delivered a single as part of the Huskies’ 6-0 win over CCSU.
The senior infielder, who redshirted her junior season, has bounced back for the Huskies. Sadowl has appeared in 33 games this season, earning 25 starts, the most since she started 48 games in 2014.
In her sophomore season, Sadowl led the Huskies with a .331 batting average, six home runs and nine doubles. Her 21 RBI were the second-most on the team and she was twice named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll.
Sadowl, along with the rest of the offense, led the Huskies to a 3-1 record this past week – including a series win over ECU, taking two of three games in Storrs.
UConn returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts UMass at 4 p.m. at the Burrill Family Field. Game action can be followed on live stats or @UConnSoftball on Twitter.
