SYRACUSE, NY (May 13) - Three members of the University of Connecticut softball team were named to All-BIG EAST teams for the 2004 season based on their strong play in conference games. Juniors Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.) and Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, and senior Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, Pa.) received third team honors.
The awards were voted on by the leagues 11 head coaches, who were not permitted to select their own players, and only statistics from BIG EAST games were considered in the voting.
DiBiases batting average of .333 in conference play led the team, and her 18 hits tied for first. She also recorded eight RBI to rank second. DiBiase struck out just six times in 54 at bats, and she played and started in all 18 conference games in center field. She also recorded two home runs and a stolen base, and tallied 18 putouts with just one error for a fielding percentage of .947. DiBiase was also recently recognized by the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association as a member of the All-Star Honorable Mention team.
Schettini, also named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team along with DiBiase, ranked second on the team with a .327 batting average in conference games. Her 18 hits tied with DiBiase for first on the squad, and included three doubles and a home run. Schettini recorded 14 of UConns 47 runs in BIG EAST play, and also tallied five RBI. She played and started in all 18 conference games at shortstop, recording 39 putouts and 26 assists.
Arbogast, named to the third team, hit .302 in conference games while starting all 18 games at first base. She tallied 16 hits including three doubles and two home runs, and recorded a team-leading nine RBI. Arbogast struck out only three times in 53 at bats, and recorded 105 putouts and seven assists at first base.
Notre Dame players earned both Player and Pitcher of the Year honors, while the Irish coaching staff was named Coaching Staff of the Year. Notre Dame players earned seven of the 12 spots on the All-BIG EAST First Team.
