STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut softball team welcomes back former Husky athletes and head coach Karen Mullins for its Alumni Weekend.
The Huskies will kick off the events with a homerun derby on Friday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. at Burrill Family Field, followed by a social at Willington Pizza from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 10, alumni are encouraged to come out and support the softball team as UConn battles Rhode Island at 2 p.m.
Prior to the game, former Connecticut softball head coach Karen Mullins will be honored for her many contributions over her 31 years at the helm of the program before throwing out the first pitch. Mullins began coaching at UConn in 1984 and led the Huskies to eight NCAA tournament appearances along with a trip to the NCAA College World Series in 1993. UConn won seven Big East tournament titles and four regular season titles during her tenure. Nine players earned All-America honors under Mullins. She concluded her Connecticut career with an overall record of 862-636-5, just one of less than 50 coaches in the history of college softball to post 800 or more career wins. In 1999, Mullins was inducted into the Connecticut Scholastic and Collegiate Softball Hall of Fame. She retired in 2013 and left the program in the hands of second-year head coach Jen McIntyre.
Saturday’s game will be followed by an alumni tailgate at Burrill Family Field at 4 p.m.
