STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut softball team has announced the addition of Megan Brown to the team’s coaching staff. Brown will join veteran head coach Karen Mullins, who enters her 31st year at the helm this spring, and assistant coach Alex Gray, who begins his second season with the squad. Brown will look to help Connecticut to a successful start its inaugural season in the American East division.
“We are very excited and pleased to welcome Megan to our staff,” commented Coach Mullins.
“She has a wealth of experience at the collegiate, professional, and international levels as well s the knowledge to impact our pitcher development immediately and in the future.”
Over the past two seasons the Georgia native has worked with the University of North Carolina Pembroke squad as an assistant coach and pitching instructor. In her two year stint with the Braves the team improved from a 16-31 record in 2012 to a 23-32 finish this past spring. Brown also found time to work extensively with the Great Britain Women’s Softball National Team, overseeing pitcher training and preparation for international competition. Other collegiate coaching opportunities included a volunteer assistant coach position at Auburn University beginning in the fall of 2009.
Brown’s impressive resume lends itself to playing excellence from a diverse set of professional experiences. She boasts exposure on the international softball scene, playing and coaching in such countries as Canada, San Marino, Italy, Netherlands, Great Britain, Czech Republic, and Bulgaria. She opened her professional career with the Rockford Thunder of the National Pro Fastpitch League in Illinois signing overseas with the Italian A1 League’s Titano Hornets, based in Dogana, San Marino. For her efforts with the Hornets Brown was named Best Pitcher for the European Cup in 2010. Brown then traveled further north to the Oosterhout Twins organization in the Netherlands for the 2012 season.
No stranger to success as a player on the diamond, Brown enjoyed a distinguished pitching career at Florida Southern College from 2004-07. During her four years with the Moccasins, Brown thrice earned All-American honors while also excelling in the classroom, being named a two-time Academic All-American and graduating summa cum laude. The Sunshine State Conference honored her as the Pitcher of the Year in three separate seasons in addition to earning All-Sunshine State Conference laurels each year of her tenure. In June she became just the seventh Florida Southern softball player inducted into the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame after having been welcomed into the Florida Southern College Athletics Hall of Fame as well.
Brown inherits a UConn pitching rotation that just graduated one of its most decorated performers in Kiki Saveriano, who finished her career in the circle with 614 career strikeouts and set the all-time program record for starts with 121. Junior Lauren Duggan appeared in the second-most games for the squad in 2013, making 13 starts in 20 appearances to earn a 6-7 record.
