STORRS, Conn. (Nov. 16) - Two regional standouts have signed their National Letter of Intent to join the University of Connecticut softball team for the 2002 season as announced by UConn coach Karen
Mullins on Thursday, Nov. 16.
Amanda Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.) has committed to the Huskies in the early signing period and is a 5- foot-3 premier shortstop out of the state of New York. She has been the starting shortstop throughout her
prep career at Coxsackie-Athens High School and is a right-handed hitter that can hit for power and average. Schettini has a career .592 batting average and also plays travel ball for the Adirondack Ice, a
women's majors team in the Northeast Seaboard Fastpitch League during the summer.
"She will fill an immediate hole at shortstop next year, with the graduation of senior Jessica Yanosy," Mullins said. "She is a gutsy competitor and an exciting player to watch. We look forward to coaching her."
Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) is a strong right-handed pitcher as well as a powerful hitter out of Mt. Greylock High School in Massachusetts. In her high school career, she batted .358 with 84 RBIs. Gurney
has been a starting varsity pitcher since seventh grade and captains her team for a fourth straight year this season. She has pitched 468 innings, while striking out 597 batters with a 1.70 ERA. During the summer
months, Gurney plays for the NWS Elite, an 18-and-under travel team.
"Her competitiveness and intensity on the mound caught our eye immediately," Mullins said. "She is a complete package and an excellent student with outstanding athletic potential. We feel Amanda and
Jessica are excellent additions to our softball family."
Connecticut finished the 2000 campaign with a 37-17 record. The Huskies captured second in the BIG EAST Conference regular season and were runner-ups in the BIG EAST Championship Tournament.
With the loss of only one starter, UConn looks to continue its success by starting off the season at the University of Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, on Feb. 23-25, 2001.
