Swimming and Diving Defeats Southern Connecticut, 159-119

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women’s swimming and diving team defeated Southern Connecticut State University 159-119 in a dual meet on Friday evening at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.

The Huskies relay team set a new pool record in the 800-yard freestyle with a time of 7:40.65. Emma Smith, Margot Manning, Holly Parker and Jackie Van Lew eclipsed the previous record, 7:44.39, recorded in the 1994-1995 season.

Smith won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.99) ahead of teammates Madeline Blair and senior co-captain Sophie Nothnagle, completing the UConn one-two-three finish.

UConn registered 10 first place finishes out of the 16 women’s events. Senior Christine Pedersen (Vinterbro, Norway) contributed first place finishes in two events, winning the 100-yard backstroke (57.16) and 200-yard medley relay (1:47.14).  

Freshman Sona Pinela (Hamden, Conn.) also logged multiple victories, taking the top spot in the 1000-yard freestyle (10.41.83) and 200-yard butterfly (2:07.36).



Other winners on Friday included Sammi Bassman (100 Breaststroke), Julie Hu (200 Breaststroke), Margot Manning (100 Free) and Samantha Park (200 Back).

On the springboards, Monica Marcello won the 1M diving event with Alli Butera (second), Michelle Kapulski (third) and Amanda Craig (fourth) performing well. The quartet finished the 3M dive with the top four scores as well. Marcello had the top score at 311.25.

The Huskies attempt to carry their momentum into Sunday’s dual meet with Seton Hall. The meet wraps up senior weekend for UConn and will begin at 1 p.m. at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.
