HANOVER, N.H. - The UConn women’s swimming and diving team secured its third-straight dual meet victory against Dartmouth, 161-134, on Saturday afternoon at the Karl Michael Pool.
Nothnagle dominated the 200-yard butterfly event, winning by almost five seconds, touching up at 2:05.10. In the 100-yard butterfly, she was able to squeak out a victory, finishing .07 second ahead of the runner-up finisher.
Emma Smith continues a strong campaign with first-place triumphs in the 500 (4:58.60) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:13.83). Smith has been the best long distance swimmer for the Huskies and is peaking with the American Conference Championships just over two weeks away.
Pedersen has been in the midst of a hot stretch of her own. Recording two additional first-place races on Saturday in the 100 (58.15) and 200-yard backstroke (2:04.71) competitions
It was great to rattle off three dual meet victories in a row heading into the conference championship, said head coach Bob Goldberg. “That is great momentum moving forward. I was impressed with Sophie [Nothnagle] and Emma’s [Smith] performances today, they were great!”
Junior Monica Marcello shined on Saturday with a couple wins in the 1M and 3M diving competitions. The Huskies as a whole were solid, securing 1-2-3 in both events. Alli Butera (276.45) and Amanda Craig (272.02) ranked second and third in the 1M and then flipped finishes in the 3M.
“We had some good results, in spite of our kids not being as sharp as I had expected for this point of the season. In defense of the athletes, the 3 hour van ride made for a rough warm-up,” said head diving coach John Bransfield. “Perhaps the best part of the meet yesterday was the recognition of areas of need to focus the next 2 weeks before the conference meet. The kids are smart, and they are tough, so I expect we'll be in good shape.”
The Huskies continue preparation for the conference championships with the Husky Open next Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium, beginning at 12 p.m.
