INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 18, 2009) - Junior Stephen Ferreira (Madison, Conn.) finished in sixth place in the one-meter diving and two UConn relay teams broke schools records as the UConn men's and women's swimming and diving teams took part in the first day of the BIG EAST Championships. The event runs through Saturday.
Ferreira scored 299.55 points in the one-meter event for the sixth place finish.
The UConn women's 200-yard medley relay team finished eighth in 1:43.98 for a school record. That team consisted of senior Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.), freshman Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas), freshman Suzannah Glaeseer (Fredricksburg, Va.) and freshman Michelle Ling (Lake Worth, Fla).
The UConn men's 200-yard medley relay team finished seventh in 1:30.30 for another school record. That team was John Henry Dasinger (Madison, Miss.), sophomore Tomasz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland), senior Adrian Astiz (Rockville, Md.) and senior Jules Alexandre (Wallingford, Conn.).
The UConn men are in fifth place after the first day while the women are seventh. Notre Dame leads both competitions.
