Gallagher Finishes In Third In 400-Yard IM At BIG EAST Swimming And Diving Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 19, 2009) - Freshman Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas) finished in third place in the 400-yard IM on Friday night in a time of 4:18.10 at the 2009 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship. She earned All-BIG EAST honors for her performance and set a school record in both the finals and preliminaries of the 400-yard IM.

The men's team was led by sophomore Alex Davidson (Point Claire, Que.), who was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.08 seconds. Davidson had a time of 49.44 seconds earlier in the day to quality for the finals. Davidson broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke three times on Friday -- in the preliminaries, the finals and with a 48.85 mark in the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay.

The men's 400-yard medley relay team set a school-record on Friday night -- besting a 10-year old mark.

The UConn men are in sixth place in the competition while the women are in seventh. Notre Dame leads both meets as the event concludes on Saturday.

Senior Adrian Astiz (Rockville, Md.) was seventh in the final of the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 48.78 seconds. Earlier in the day, he swam a 48.62 in the preliminaries. Astiz has now advanced to two finals in the championships as he was in Thursday's 200-yard IM final and was sixth.

Sophomore Tomasz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland) was sixth in the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke in a school-record time of 56.29 seconds. Earlier in the day, he swam a 55.39 in the prelims.

Junior Steven Ferreira (Madison, Conn.) was eighth in the three-meter diving with a finals score of 288.70. He was sixth in the one-meter diving earlier in the competition.

Also on the women's side, senior Kristalynn Kempton (Glen Head, N.Y.) was eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke final with a time of 1:04.38 after posting a 1:04.04 in the preliminaries.



Senior Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) was third in the consolation final in the 100-yard backstroke in a school-record time of 55.36 seconds.

Gallagher and Shelps were joined by senior Erin McLaughlin (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Suzannah Glaeseer (Fredrickburg, Va.) in a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:46.26.
