LAWRENCE, Kansas - UConn senior Emma Smith (Nepan, Ontario) finished in 34th place on Saturday at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Collegiate Open Water Championship at Lone Star Lake.
Smith finished the 5,000-meter race in 1:10.29.26 while Bryn Hadley of Southern Illinois won in 1:04.39.32.
"Anytime we can swim in a national championship meet is a plus for our program," said UConn head coach Chris Maiello. "We have started our open water program this season and it was a success. I am pleased with our effort and execution of our race plans. Karl and Emma represented UConn very well.
"This was Emma's first experience in open water and she handled it well. She swam faster today than she did in our prep swims this fall. She continues to train well and we are looking for a big season from her.
"We are looking forward to returning to the pool and continuing our training as we approach our NCAA season."
The UConn men's and women's swimming and diving season continues with the first dual meet coming on Friday, October 13 when the Huskies play host to Yale at 5 p.m.
