STORRS, Conn – The UConn women’s swimming and diving team kicked off its 2016-17 campaign with a pair of first-place finishes against the University of Bridgeport (160.0 – 110.0) and Keene State Swim and Dive (188.0 – 98.0) on Saturday afternoon at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.
Seniors Christine Pedersen (Vinterbro, Norway) and Margot Manning (Frederick, Md.) both placed first in multiple events in the season-opener. Pedersen earned a double win in the 100-yard backstroke (57.32) and 200-yard backstroke (2.03.65), while Manning (Frederick, Md.) captured wins finished in the 100-yard freestyle (52.98) and 200-yard IM (2.08.88).
In the 200-yard back, fellow senior Samantha Park (Washington Crossing, Pa.) finished in second to Pedersen with a time of 2:05:72.
Freshmen Brazil Rule (Crozet, Va.) notched her first career victory in the 100-yard butterfly (57.74).
The 200-yard butterfly was dominated by the Huskies, as the team placed senior Sophie Nothangle (2:03:98), freshmen Sona Pinela (2:08:82) and sophomore Danielle Bordes (2:11:98) all in the top three of the event.
The divers turned in an exceptional performance with junior Monica Marcello (Middletown, Conn.), seniors Michelle Kapulski (Chicago, Ill.) and Amanda Craig (Woodbridge, Conn.) finishing in the top three of both the 1-meter and 3-meter Diving events.
In the 1-meter event Marcello logged a score of 284.62, Kapulski 268.19 and Craig posted a mark of 253.05. The 3-meter event the scores consisted of Marcelo 287.10, Kapulski 254.40 and Craig 231.82.
The Huskies are back in action next weekend in the Annual Alumni Meet and Social at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium, Saturday October 22nd at 12:00 p.m.
