STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s swimming team hosted a non-scoring scrimmage against Yale, Rhode Island and Central Connecticut on Friday afternoon at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.
The Huskies saw impressive swims for several swimmers, including freshmen Jackie Van Lew (Tinton Falls, N.J.) and Annika Grewal (Oakville, Ontario) along with junior Christine Pedersen (Vinterbro, Norway), who all earned first-place finishes on Friday.
Van Lew won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.39 and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.79). Grewal claimed first-place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.08) and second in the 100-yard butterfly (56.99).
Pedersen, who had a productive season last year that included winning the 100 and 200-meter backstroke events at the 2015 Norwegian Short Course Nationals and 2015 Norwegian National Championships, topped all swimmers in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.00.
Other Huskies with quality times on Friday were freshman Julie Hu (Wilton, Conn.), junior Sophie Nothnagle (Victor, N.Y.) and classmate Jordan Drake (Marietta, Ga.). Hu swam to third-place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.41). Nothnagle touched the wall in 2:02.19 to win the 200-yard butterfly and Drake finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (54.18).
Pedersen, Grewal and Van Lew took third-place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.17) along with senior Laura Hyland (Southport, England). Nothnagle joined Van Lew, freshman Danielle Bordes (Alpharetta, Ga.) and junior Margot Manning (Frederick, Md.) in posting an excellent time (3:32.10) to finish second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Huskies open the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Storrs when both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams compete against Villanova. The meet is scheduled to start at noon.
