Women's Swimming And Diving Opens With Two Wins

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's swimming and diving team opened its 2012-13 season with a pair of dual meet victories on Saturday. The Huskies topped Fordham by a 164.5-125.5 score and Bucknell by a 186.5-113.5 score. Fordham also beat Bucknell, 173.5-126.5.

Sophomore Chinyere Pigot (Miami, Fla.), who represented her native Suriname at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics, won the 50-yard freestyle and was part of the winning free relay team.

Junior Jordan Bowen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) was first in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle and was part of the winning free relay team.

Freshman Laura Hyland (Southport, England) was first in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke and part of the winning medley relay team.

In the diving events, seniors Danielle Cecco (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Nicole Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) both qualified for the NCAA Zone Championship at the end of the season. Cecco won the three-meter event with a score of 299.40 while Borriello was second at 274.10 and Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) was third with 228.35. Cecco also won the one-meter at 300.75 while Borriello was second at 231.25 and Urbanus was fourth with 219.50

UConn returns to action on Friday when it travels to Army for a 6:00 p.m. meet.
