STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's and women's swimming teams opened its seasons on Saturday with the Husky Invitational. UConn won the women's portion of the event with 826 points followed by Fordham with 765.5, Fairfield with 278.5, Providence with 197 and Merchant Marine with 52. On the men's side, Fordham won with 714 followed by UConn with 683.5, Providence with 275.5, Fairfield with 242 and Merchant Marine with 173.
Freshman Kate Dobler (Pittsford, N.Y.0 had an outstanding day with a win the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.31, a third-place finish in the 100-yard free in 53.8 seconds and a fifth-place in the 50-yard free in 25.1 seconds.
Freshman Jordan Bowen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:26.71. Sophomore Anna Drinka (San Antonio, Texas) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.73, was third in the 200-yard IM in 2:11.03 while sophomore Ye Ling (Lake Worth, Fla.) won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.40 seconds.
On the men's side, freshman Kyungsoo Yoon (Toronto, Ont.) won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.01 seconds and the 100-yad freestyle in 46.48. Sophomore Mitch Dansky (Winchendon, Mass.) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.29.
Junior Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Que.) won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.75 and the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.29. Junior Tomasz Sobek (Siemianowie Slaskie, Poland) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.44 and the 200-yard breast in 2:09.23.
Senior John Hogan (Walkersville, Md.) won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.64 and was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.49 seconds.
UConn returns to action next weekend, along with the diving teams, as the Rutgers men and the Villanova men and women. The action gets underway Friday at 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
