Huskies Come in Third at Penn State Tri-Meet

 – The University of Connecticut women’s swimming and diving team concluded its tri-meet against Penn State and Princeton on Saturday, finishing the meet in third place with a final score of 860. The Nittany Lions were first (1,094) and the Tigers came in second (993).

Freshman swimmer Jackie Van Lew (Tinton Falls, N.J.) topped the competition in the 100 and 200-yard freestyles while senior diver Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) swept the field in the one-meter and three-meter finals.

Van Lew paced the Huskies after winning the 100-yard freestyle in 51.89 with sophomore Margot Manning (Frederick, Md.) coming in fourth. Van Lew touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.65.

Urbanus continued her strong start to the season on Friday, capturing first-place in the three-meter with a final score of 296.45. Juniors Alexandra Butera (Havertown, Pa.) and Michelle Kalupski (Chicago, Ill.) also placed in the event, as Butera finished third (253.55), while Kalupski posted a score of 248.90 to take home fourth-place honors. Sophomore Monica Marcello (Middletown, Conn.) was fifth (243.30).

UConn dominated the one-meter platform on Saturday, starting with another top finish for Urbanus with 287.70 points. Kalupski came in third with a score of 258.40. Butera, Marcelllo and junior Amanda Craig (Woodbridge, Conn.) rounded were among the top six finishers.



Junior Sophie Nothnagle (Victor, N.Y.) notched a victory in the 200-yard freestyle by swimming the event in a time of 2:03.34. Rookie swimmer Annika Grewal (Oakville, Ontario) placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.79) and senior Laura Ruttan (Stittsville, Ontario) earned her own second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke after she swam it in 2:22.48.

In the 400-yard medley relay, Grewal, Ruttan, Nothnagle and Van Lew took a fourth-place finish (3:52.04). The 200-yard medley relay team of Ruttan, Nothnagle, Manning and junior Christine Pedersen (Vinterbro, Norway) also came in fourth.

UConn will get back in the water at the Bison Invitational on Nov. 20-22 in Lewisburg, Pa.
