COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Connecticut freshman Jordan Bowen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) broke a school record in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday as the Husky men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed on the first day of the Terrapin Cup.
Bowen swam a 4:49.01 in the preliminaries of the 500 to register the school record and also make an NCAA B Cut time. Sophomore Ye Ling (Monterrey, Mexico) set a school record in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries with a time of 23.54 seconds.
The Huskies are in second place after the first day of the women's competition with 208 points while Maryland leads with 293. The UConn men are also in second place with 292 points with Maryland leading with 331.
Freshmen Katie Dobler (Pittsford, N.Y.), Mary DeMarrrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Nicole Frost (Norco, Calif.) all posted personal-best times for the women's team as did freshman Kyungsoo Yoon (Toronto, Ont.), Brendan Murphy (Watertown, Conn.) and Jeremy Ramshaw (Mississauga, Ont.) from the men's team.
Junior Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Que.) was impressive in the leadoff led of the 400-yard free relay and while sophomore Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas) finished in second place in the 200-yard IM in breaststroke leg of the relay.
The event continues through Saturday.
