SOUTH BEND, Ind. (January 27, 2007) – The University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving team finished competition at the Shamrock Invitational on Saturday at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Ind.
The women’s team defeated Oakland University by a score of 220-143 and fell to Notre Dame (293-76), Penn State (291-78) and West Virginia (264-105).
The men were defeated by Notre Dame (284-86), Oakland University (228-140), Penn State (290-80) and West Virginia (273-97).
The Huskies day was highlighted by diver Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.) taking home the top spot in the one-meter diving event with a final score of 266.80.
UConn had several top-ten finishes during the final day of competition.
For the men, Tristan Jones (Canberra, Australia) finished 9th in both the 400 IM and 100 breaststroke. Abed Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) finished tied for 10th in the 100 butterfly with fellow teammate Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.). Astiz also took 6th place in the 200 butterfly. Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) placed 8th in the 200 breaststroke and 10th in the 100 breaststroke. Ryan Thompson (Branford, Conn.) placed 10th in the 200 breaststroke. John Henry Dasinger (Madison, Miss.) was the 10th place swimmer in the 200 butterfly. Diver Stephen Ferreira (Madison, Conn.) was 10th in the one-meter dive.
For the women, Courney Haney (Mesa, Ariz.) took 8th place in the 100 breaststroke and 9th in the 200 breaststroke. Heather Grieb (Manasquan, N.J.) was the 9th place finisher in the 200 backstroke.
The Huskies will be back in action for the BIG EAST Championships on February 14-17. The meet will be held in Uniondale, N.Y.
