PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Connecticut freshman swimmer Christine Pedersen (Vinterbro, Norway) was named the American Athletic Conference Female Swimmer of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon.
Pedersen has been sensational in backstroke events all season long for the Huskies, who finished the regular season at 4-2 after defeating Colgate, 167-118, on Sunday. The freshman won all four backstroke races this past weekend, starting Saturday against Dartmouth in the 100-yard backstroke, which she finished first in with a time of 57.67. In the 200-yard backstroke, Pedersen captured first place honors after swimming the event in 2:05.49.
On Sunday, Pedersen teamed up with fellow freshmen Tara O’Prey (Ridley Park, Pa.), Madeleine Hoopes (Greensburg, Pa.) and junior Chinyere Pigot (Miami, Fla.) to win the 200-yard medley relay after swimming her leg in 27.27. She then finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (58.17) and concluded her day with a victory in the 200-yard backstroke, completing it in 2:06.04.
“As an international freshman swimmer, Pedersen has been constantly improving and adjusting to college swimming in the United States,” UConn swimming coach Bob Goldberg said. “She is peaking at the right time for our conference championships in a couple weeks.”
Pedersen will be a big factor for UConn at the American Athletic Conference Championships, which are set to take place Feb. 19-22 in Louisville, Ky. The Huskies return to the pool this Saturday for the UConn Husky Open at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.
