John Bransfield Awarded Women's Co-Diving Coach of the Year

Feb. 20, 2017

HOUSTON - The American Athletic Conference handed out its conference awards after the conclusion of The American Championships in Houston on Saturday. UConn Head Diving Coach John Bransfield received Women's Co-Diving Coach of the Year with Houston's Bob Gunter.

This is the second-consecutive season Bransfield has been honored as the Women's Co-Diving Coach of the Year. The 19th year head coach has aided the Huskies in sending six Huskies to the NCAA Zone A Meet this season. The group is the largest contingency to represent UConn at the NCAA Zones.

UConn qualifiers included; Alli Butera, Monica Marcello, Amanda Craig and Michelle Kalupski, from the women's team squad. Junior Dan Kinney and Spencer Beaulieu have qualified for the men's team.

The Huskies are coming off an impressive performance on the boards at The American Championships. The diving team secured six of the 16 medals in diving, including two golds and swept the women's 1M competition.

"To be recognized as a Co-Coach of the Year for the women along with the diving coach at Houston is certainly an honor," said Bransfield. "Houston won the Women's Team Championship, but our divers were on the podium as often; we won the same number of medals."

"The bottom line is that the athletes' names should be etched into that trophy. My athletes won that award for the coach. There are many very good coaches in the field, but if the athletes don't deliver at the right time the recognition simply goes without notice," said Bransfield.

The Huskies head to the NCAA Zone A Diving Meet on Monday, March 6 through Wednesday March 8 in Blacksburg, Va.
