BLACKSBURG, Va. – With a third place finish in the women’s three-meter dive senior Alli Butera qualified for the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis on day one of the NCAA Zones A Championships on Monday.
Butera (Havertown, Pa.) scored a 631.0 in the competition to take third place. She recorded a 308.50 in the preliminaries to place second in the preliminaries. The recorded 631.0 in the finals to solidify a spot in the NCAA Championship by placing in the top six.
Junior Dan Kinney and Spencer Beaulieu competed in the one-meter dive on Monday. In the preliminaries, Kinney scored a 253.20 to rank 28th among 39 divers. Beaulieu registered a 229.0 landing in 35th. The divers had to place in the top 18 to move on to the finals.
"Alli Butera qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second year straight is a remarkable accomplishment," said head diving coach John Bransfield. "She was awfully tough in this contest today, finishing in third place in a challenging field. I was very proud of her focus during the four-hour event, and her conviction round after round."
The NCAA Zones A Championships continue tomorrow with the men’s three-meter dive and the women’s one-meter dive.
