ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Six University of Connecticut divers completed their first day of the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship Meet on Monday, March 7 in Annapolis, Md., hosted on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy.
UConn had four of its six divers make the finals on the opening day of the meet.
On the men’s side, senior John Brice (Bala Cynwood, Pa.) finished seventh (328.40) in the preliminaries of the three-meter to claim a spot in the finals. Teammate Daniel Kinney (Middletown, Conn.) checked in at 33rd in the quarterfinals with 274.15 points. In the finals, Brice placed 11th behind 639.70 points and averaged 6.00 points on his dives.
For the women, junior Alexandra Butera (Havertown, Pa.) led the way on the one-meter springboard, coming in seventh in both the preliminary round and final. She started the day with 259.75 points and closed out the day with a score of 528.25 in the final.
Sophomore Monica Marcello (Middletown, Conn.) and junior Michelle Kalupski (Chicago, Ill.) joined Butera in the finals. Marcello placed 14th after totaling 471.40 points, while Kalupski finished 17th with a final score of 470.45. Senior Taryn Urbanus came in 22nd (232.60) in the preliminaries.
The six divers will have another chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships as the women’s three-meter and men’s one-meter are set for Tuesday. The action is set to begin at noon in Lenjeune Hall. The NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships take place on March 17-19, while the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships is set for March 20-22. Both meets will be in Atlanta, Ga. on the campus of Georgia Tech.
