BLACKSBURG, Va. - University of Connecticut sophomore divers Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) and John Brice (Bala Cynwood, Pa.) both placed in events on day one of the Zone A Diving Championships, which run from Monday through Wednesday this week in the Christiansburg Aquatic Center at Virginia Tech.
Urbanus, who won the 3-meter final last month at the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, finished 12th in the 1-meter finals today with a final score of 473.80. She scored a 232.65 in the preliminary round, which were held earlier today at 12 p.m. Connecticut freshman Alexandra Butera (Havertown, Pa.) stood in 19th place after the preliminaries after scoring 223.50 points, while fellow freshman Michelle Kalupski (Chicago, Ill.) accumulated 208.75 points in the preliminaries, which was the 28th best mark.
Brice earned a 13th-place finish for the 3-meter finals, as he scored a 628.90 after finishing the preliminary round with 312.35 points. Senior Anthony Cortright (Wallingford, Conn.) also placed in the preliminaries, scoring a 282.75 to finish in 22nd place.
The divers that finished in the top two spots today clinched a berth in the NCAA Championships, while those who earned a top-five finish still have a chance to get into the championships.
The actions resumes tomorrow with the preliminaries of the women’s 3-meter and men’s 1-meter set for 12 p.m. and the finals of both events are slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
