University of Connecticut seniors Jordan Bowen (Lake Elmo, Minn.), Mary deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Kate O'Leary (Brookfield, Conn.) have been named captains of the 2012-13 women's swimming and diving team. On the men's side, seniors Nick Cerra (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), Sean Cook (Doylestown, Pa.) and Joe Glowacki (Erie, Pa.) have been named captains.
Bowen has has re-written the UConn record books by owning seven record marks including the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.52), the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.63), the 1000-yard freestyle (10:01.18) and the 1650-yard freestyle. (16:35.68). She is the anchor of the school record 400-yard medley relay (3:44.41), 400-yard free relay (3:25.37) and 800-yard free relay (7:20.27). Bowen is also an active member UConn's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
deMarrais is one of the most versatile swimmers on the team having scored in the BIG EAST Conference is several events including the 200-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley and the 1650-yard freestyle.
O'Leary has been a late emerging swimmer as she came to UConn with best breaststroke times in the 1:07 to 2:28 range and she has dropped that to a very respectable 1:04 and 2:22 this past season.
Cerra was forced to miss his freshman season after sustaining a broker wrist in training and missing several months of swimming. After a year of rebuilding his strength, he has returned to form and last season and posted very respectable 50.1 and 1:50.9 butterfly times and a solid 1:52 IM. Cerra is president of UConn's SAAC.
Cook can swim a multitude of events very well as he is an accomplished 100-yard and 200-yard freestyler with range from the 50-yard freestyle to the 500-yard freestyle and in addition very good in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke.
Glowacki has developed from a versatile all-around, multi-talented athlete in high school to a great butterflier in college with his focus mainly on swimming. He is highly competitive in the conference in both the 100 and 200 fly and strong in freestyle sprint events also.
