NARRAGNASETT, R.I. – A month before opening the 2016 season, members of the UConn men’s and women’s swimming and diving team will participate in the SAA Rhode Island Open Water swim on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Roger Wheeler Beach in Rhode Island. The event serves as a fundraiser to benefit cancer research, prevention, and treatment.
Saturday’s swim features athletes of all ages. In 2015, the event raised more than $200,000, offering half-mile or full-mile open water courses.
Husky sophomore Walker Hill is the top overall individual fundraiser, receiving nearly $5,000 in total pledges. As a team, UConn has raised over $12,300 for the annual event.
The Rhode Island Swim announced that proceeds will benefit Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, R.I. The Program in Women’s Oncology at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, the largest and most diverse oncology service for women in the Northeast, was launched in 1989 to provide a broad spectrum of care for gynecological and breast cancers. It has evolved into a world-renowned, multi-disciplinary facility where clinicians uncover key answers to the questions of cancer, and focus on the needs of the patients and families.
