Bishop had a terrific summer as he competed at the USA Swimming National Championships in Indianapolis in late June. Bishop finished 15th in the nation in the 1,500-meters in a time of 15:31.96. He also swam in the 800-meter freestyle and finished 32nd nationally.
Smith won two events at last year’s American Athletic Conference championship. She won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:44.34, which was also an NCAA B cut mark. Smith continued her stellar championships with a first-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle. Her time of 16.19.90 set a new school record and was a record in the conference meet.
The Open Water Championship will also mark the debut of new men’s and women’s swimming and diving head coach Chris Maiello. Maiello led the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs at North Dakota for the past four years and helped usher the program’s transition into Division I status.
In addition to his tenure at North Dakota, Maiello also brings a strong background as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Navy from 2008-13.
The UConn men’s and women’s swimming and diving season continues with the first dual meet coming on Friday, October 13 when the Huskies play host to Yale at 5 p.m.
