STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s swimming and diving team kicks off its season Saturday when it hosts Central Connecticut, Rhode Island and Yale in a non-scoring quad meet at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. The action is set to begin at 12 p.m.
The Huskies enter the 2014-15 season after posting a 4-2 record last year in the team’s first season in the American Athletic Conference. UConn finished fourth of six in the inaugural conference meet this past February, as senior swimmer Chinyere Pigot (Miami, Fla.) and junior diver Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) both earned All-Conference honors. Pigot won the 50-yard freestyle final, finishing with a school record time of 22.81, while Urbanus topped all divers in the 3-meter final with a score of 313.55.
“This scrimmage is the first chance our women will be able to race outside of practice this season,” UConn swimming coach Bob Goldberg said. “We are excited to see where we are in our training.”
Saturday’s meet marks the second straight year the Huskies will swim against the Bulldogs, who finished last year with an overall record of 7-3 in dual meets. Yale and Connecticut participated in a non-scoring scrimmage last season in Storrs.
The last time UConn faced Central Connecticut was in 2010 at the Husky Invitational when both the men’s and women’s team notched victories over CCSU, Providence, Fairfield and Fordham. The Blue Devils were picked to finish second in the Northeast Conference this season in a preseason poll released earlier this month. Rhode Island begins its season on Saturday after ending the 2013-14 campaign with a 6-4 overall record and a seventh-place finish at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships.
