STORRS, Conn. – The American Athletic Conference announced the first swimming and diving weekly honors of the 2016-2017 season. Junior diver Monica Marcello (Middletown, Conn) received Female Diver of the Week with her performance in the first meet of the season.

Marcello competed in the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions at the first meet of the season, a dual-meet against the University of Bridgeport and Keene Sate. In the 1-meter Marcello scored a 284.62 to take the top spot and followed it up with a 287.10 mark in the 3-meter event to vault her into first place.

Marcello is coming off a breakout sophomore season in which she competed in the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, finishing 18th (522.50) in the finals of the 3-meter.

“Monica has been concentrating her training more on fundamental work than in doing dive lists for competition so far this year,” said 19th year Head Diving Coach John Bransfield.

“Some of the dives she did in the contest on Saturday showed improvements in those areas, but were enhanced by her increased IQ of certain moves and skill sets from the past two years.
For what we’ve been doing this fall, for Monica to be able to have some advanced pieces fall in place this early in the competitive season is very exciting for the possibilities to come," said Bransfield.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday October 22nd with the Alumni Meet and Social, beginning at 12 p.m. at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.
