PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Connecticut senior swimmer Chinyere Pigot (Miami, Fla.) has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Swimmer of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.
Pigot, who owns the UConn school records in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, had a fantastic opening weekend for the Huskies. The Connecticut speedster collected wins in the 100-yard freestyle (51.89), 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.50) and 200-yard medley relay (1:46.00) in UConn’s 134.5-127.5 season-opening win over Villanova on Friday.
She also earned a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.10 against the Wildcats and on Saturday against Fordham, she boasted three more victories. Pigot swept the freestyle events against the Rams, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 24.05 and the 100-yard freestyle after touching the wall in 52.50. The Miami native concluded her weekend with another strong finish, tallying second place honors in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:39.29.) Pigot competed in eight events in back-to-back days for the Huskies, who improved to 2-0 on the season with a win over the Rams.
UConn returns to action this Saturday when it hosts its annual Homecoming Alumni Meet at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. The meet is set to start at 12 p.m.
