STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s tennis team opened their spring schedule by sweeping a pair of dual matches with Bryant and Marist on Saturday.  The Huskies swept Marist 7-0 and topped Bryant, 6-1, to improve their dual match record to 4-1 on the year.

“Our doubles was solid in both matches and it set the tone for each match,” commented head coach Glenn Marshall.  “All of the players were focused and ready to start the season with a great effort today.  I think the fact we brought the team back early from winter break to start training, really paid dividends for these matches.  I am looking forward to our next matches, because our confidence is high after these two solid wins.”

The Huskies swept all three doubles matches to open their match with Marist.  The team of sophomore Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and freshman Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) led the way with a 6-0 win over Nikki Rohan and Melissa Carlay at #2.

UConn also swept all six singles matches with the Red Foxes all while not dropping a single set.  Junior Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia) led the way with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #1 over Claire Schmitz.

In her collegiate debut, freshman Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) won both her doubles and singles matches.  Pletnyeva and sophomore Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kan.) teamed for a 6-2 win over Elizabeth Brozovich and Katie Setiz at #3 doubles.  She earned a 7-5, 6-2 in in her first singles match, beating Callie Morlock, 7-5 and 6-2.

Alderman won her #2 singles match with Seitz in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0.  Zaki posted a 6-0 and 6-2 win over Carlay at #4 while classmate Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) and Flanagan both earned 6-2, 6-2 wins to complete the sweep at #5 and #6.

The Huskies opened their match with Bryant by winning the doubles point.  Senior Maxene Weinberg (Marietta, Ga.) and Stosljevic won their second doubles match of the day, beating Ryan Brown and Marion Bouillin at #1, 7-6 (5).  The #3 team of Pletnyeva and Walker had a 6-2 win over Nina Luiggi and Stefanie Arroyo.

UConn’s Stosljevic won at #1 of Brown, 7-5 and 6-0 and was followed by Alderman and Pletnyeva at #2 and #3 with victories.  The lone Bryant victory came at #4, where UConn’s Zaki lost in three sets, 4-6, 6-2 and 10-2 in a tiebreak.  Walker posted a 6-0 and 6-0 win at #5 over Luiggi and Flanagan won her #6 match with Rosie Bird, 6-3 and 6-3.
