Feb. 6, 2015

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The UConn women's tennis team took four of the six singles matches on their way to a 4-3 victory over Army Friday afternoon, marking the program's first-ever win over the Black Knights.  The Huskies won a trio of three-set singles matches to battle their way back to the victory to open the spring with three-straight wins.

"It was an unbelievably exciting match, that came down to the wire," commented head coach Glenn Marshall.  "It was the first victory over Army for the program and I couldn't be more proud of the team for their fight and determination.  Every player was pushing everybody throughout the match, and we just rose to the occasion for this awesome victory."

The Huskies opened Friday's dual match by dropping the doubles point.  UConn won at #2 doubles with the team of sophomore Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and freshman Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) posting a 6-3 win over Maya Parker and Elle Taylor.  The Black Knights won at #1 and #3 to grab the doubles point.

UConn newcomer Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) got the Huskies off to a fast start to singles action, winning her match at #3 in quick fashion, 6-1 and 6-2 over Hannah Dahlem to even the team score.  Fellow freshman Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead thanks to a 6-3 and 6-0 win over Nancy Porter at #5.

Army's Carolyn Pittman won a tough battle with junior Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia), 6-4 and 7-5 to even the match and setting up a dramatic finish.  The last three singles matches would all go to a third set and come down to the final match of the day at #6.

Alderman gave UConn a 3-2 lead with a comeback win over Eva Sung at #2, battling back from a 6-4 loss in the first set to win 6-2 and 6-3.  At #4, Zaki won her first set 6-2 over Taylor but came up short, falling 7-6 (4) and 6-4 to even the match at 3-3.  UConn sophomore Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kan.) and Army's Allyson Hayley at #6.

Flanagan fell in the first set 6-4 but began her comeback with a hard fought 7-6 (5) second set tiebreaker win.  The sophomore clinched the win and the match with a 6-4 victory in the third set, giving the Huskies a 3-0 start to their spring season.

UConn will be right back in action Saturday afternoon when they take on Stony Brook at 3:00 pm from West Point.
