Women's Tennis Swept by Stony Brook on Saturday

WEST POINT, N.Y. - In its first match of the spring season, the University of Connecticut women's tennis team lost to Stony Brook 7-0 at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center. This is the first time since the spring of 2006 that the Huskies have opened the season with a loss.

The Seawolves took the lead with the doubles point, winning the first and second matches by an 8-5 margin. Emily Searle (Lyme, Conn.) and Jennifer Marotta (Nesconset, N.Y.) lost their battle at No. 3 doubles 8-1.

In singles play, Stony Brook won each match in two sets. Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Paoloa Rodolfi. Ali Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) lost her match at No. 2 singles to the Seawolves' Hanson, 6-1, 6-4. UConn team captain BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) fell 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot.

Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) was unable to overcome a 6-3 loss in the first set, dropping the second 6-0. Searle was held without a game in fifth singles while Marotta was able to get one in a 6-0, 6-1 loss in sixth singles.

The season continues on Sunday with a match against Army at 10 a.m.
