CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of Connecticut women's tennis opened the BIG EAST season in just its third match of the spring season on Saturday. The Huskies fell 6-1 to West Virginia at the Western Athletic Club in Cincinnati. Senior Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) spoiled the Mountaineers aspirations of a sweep. Despite losing the doubles point, Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Lauren Wilmarth (Andover, Mass.) gave UConn a win at No. 3.
LoRusso defeated Stephanie LaFortune in first singles in the first conference contest of the year for the Huskies. After losing her doubles match with junior Katie Moritz (York, Pa.), LoRusso recovered for the two-set victory at No. 1.
West Virginia secured the doubles point with wins at first and second doubles. The lone loss for the Mountaineers in doubles play was at No. 3 thanks to Herb and Wilmarth. The Connecticut duo claimed an 8-1 victory.
Three singles matches took three-sets to decide the victor, including an all out battle at No. 4 with Wilmarth falling to West Virginia's Katie Haught. Herb and senior Alli Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) fell in three sets in their respective matches at third and second.
Sophomore Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) lost her singles battle at No. 5 in the Mountaineer 6-1 victory.
The Huskies (0-3, 0-1) continue conference play in Cincinnati on Sunday against the Bearcats.
