EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team dropped their second American Athletic Conference dual match of the season on Friday, falling to Temple 5-2 at the East Hartford Tennis Club. The Huskies are 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the AAC.
"This was a tough loss against a very good Temple team," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "The doubles was back and forth the whole time. Lizzy and Cassie played one of their best doubles matches of the season, and we clinched it with a great come from behind win at #2."
UConn's top doubles team of Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) and sophomore Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) posted an impressive 6-1 win at No. 1 to set the doubles tone. The Huskies clinched the point at No. 2 thanks to the senior tandem of Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) and Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.), who beat Alina Abdurakhimova and Oyku Boz, 7-6 (4).
"Moving into singles I felt like the team was motivated and had some great momentum. Unfortunately, we lost close first sets on courts 2-6, and never recovered from that. They simply played tougher and smarter than us down the stretch. Lizzy was a bright spot of the day with a very nice straight set win in singles."
The Huskies lone win in singles came at the top-spot thanks to Pletnyeva who posted her 19th victory of the season. She posted a 6-1 and 6-4 win over Abdurakhimova.
UConn's match with Tulane on Sunday has been postponed. The Huskies will next be in action on their annual spring break trip when they play four matches agianst the likes of Drexel, Army West Point, Colgate and Northern Iowa at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
