ORLANDO, Fla. - With a 7-0 victory over Bethel, the University of Connecticut women's tennis team secured its first win of the spring season on Tuesday. The Huskies rebounded from a shutout loss in its first match of the spring break trip to defeat the Wildcats on Monday in Orlando, Fla.
"It feels nice to get our first win of the spring season," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "We were led by our senior captains today and the effort carried over to the entire team."
Seniors Alli Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Kelly LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) paired with junior Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and freshman Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.), respectively to help secure the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
Campitiello and McKeon completely shutout their Wildcat foe for the win in second doubles. The freshman duo of Sarah Griffin (Cheshire, Conn.) and Julia Allen (Raleigh, N.C.) defeated the Bethel duo of Moutenado and Martin, 8-3 to win at No. 3.
Sophomore Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.), freshman Lauren Wilmarth (Andover, Mass.), sophomore Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) and McKeon all shutout their Royal single opponents en route to the overall win.
LoRusso won her match at No. 1 over Kim-Lea Dinh, 6-2, 6-2 and fellow team captain got the win over Marcela Vita R. Santos at second single.
The season continues with the Huskies (1-5 Spring, 3-7 Overall) final match in Orlando against Liberty on Wednesday.
