March 13, 2018

BRADENTON, Fla. – The UConn women’s tennis team finished their spring break trip a perfect 4-0 thanks to a pair of 7-0 sweeps on Tuesday over Colgate and Northern Iowa.  The Huskies will head back to Connecticut with a 9-6 dual match record on their ledger.

I am really pleased how we played during our doubleheader match today with Colgate and the University of Northern Iowa," stated head coach Glenn Marshall.  "It was a grueling day,  but the kids stayed focused and took care of business."

"Our singles was strong for both matches, and we fought through a couple of tough matches to earn wins in every position.  Elizabeth Kozyi did a nice job at number 6 singles today, earning two straight set victories."

Senior Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) ran her winning streak to eight-straight with a pair of wins at No. 1 during the day, beating Colgate’s Mackenzie Deeter, 6-3 and 6-3, in the morning and ending her day with a 6-0, 6-0 win over UNI’s Gisela Kemper.  Pletnyeva is 9-1 over her last 10 and is now 23-6 on the season.

In doubles, she teamed with junior Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) for a pair of wins, improving to 6-0 as a team this season.  Pletnyeva raised her doubles record to 16-7 on the season.  The duo took down Colgate’s Deeter and Jordan Williams, 6-2, and UNI’s Kemper and Reghan Lynch, 6-2, both at No. 1.

Senior Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) ran her winning streak to four-straight with two wins on Tuesday, improving to 15-12 on the year.  Walker played at No. 2 against Colgate and beat Lauren O’Brien, 6-0 and 6-3 and then beat Claudia Toledo of UNI at No. 3 in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, and 10-2.

Juniors Fitz-Randolph and Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) both extended their winning streaks to three-straight with two wins each.  Fitz-Randolph beat Colgate’s Williams at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-3, and beat UNI’s Lynch at No. 2, 7-6 (8), 6-2.  She is now 14-8 on the season in singles and her two wins with Pletnyeva in doubles give her 12 doubles victories this season.

Lazaro improved to 22-6 on the season, including 10-4 in dual match play.  Lazaro played singles in just the UNI match at night on Tuesday, beating Harri Proudfoot, 6-0 and 6-2.  In doubles, she teamed with classmate Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) for a pair of wins. They beat Colgate’s Stephanie Fuentes and Lauren O’Brien, 6-3, and UNI’s Toledo and Savanna Hunt, 6-3.

Senior Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) also won a pair of singles matches, beating Colgate’s Kelly Klein, 6-3 and 6-1, at No. 4 and UNI’s Valentina Caro, 6-2 and 6-4, at No. 5.  Zaki picked-up her 10th win on the year, making her the seventh Husky to post double digit singles wins.

Freshman Elizabeth Kozyi (Boca Raton, Fla.) won her two singles matches on Tuesday as well, beating Elinor Simek of Colgate, 6-0 and 6-0, and Norther Iowa’s Hunt, 6-0 and 6-0.

"Overall I am extremely pleased with the results from this spring training trip, and it should be a nice momentum builder going into our last 6 matches of the spring season," commented the head coach.

The Huskies are next in action on March 23rd when they play host to Stonehill College in Storrs.
