STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis ream won its first BIG EAST match of the 2009 season with a 5-2 victory over Georgetown on Saturday. Reigning BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) returned to her winning ways with a three-set victory in third singles at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts.
Cheung won the first and third sets en route to her fifth victory at No. 3 singles this spring. The UConn team captain started the day with a loss, pairing with Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) for the Huskies' lone doubles loss.
Connecticut started the match with a one-point advantage, winning at first and second doubles. Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won an 8-4 decision at No. 1 doubles. Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) secured the doubles point with an 8-6 victory in third doubles.
LoRusso and Herb were both successful in singles play winning and first and fourth singles, respectively. Moritz dropped a two-set decision to Alex Sebia at No. 5 singles. Gregory earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles.
"This was a good win for our team today," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "The players bounced back nicely after our match yesterday at Syracuse."
The season continues for women's tennis (5-5) on March 25 at St. John's. The match begins at 3 p.m.
