STORRS, Conn. - In the first home match of the spring season, the University of Connecticut women's tennis team registered its first BIG EAST victory of the year. The Huskies defeated Providence at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon. UConn swept doubles, including a pair 8-0 decisions en route to an early lead that continued to singles play.
Senior Alli Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) with freshman Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.) earned an 8-0 victory at second doubles while another Husky duo achieved the same margin of victory at No. 3. Junior Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and sophomore Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) shutout Melissa Ferry and Brittany Maddock in third doubles.
Herb and Gregory are 2-0 in third doubles this season while the win at No. 2 for Campitiello and McKeon is their fifth this spring.
The Huskies lost one singles match en route to the overall victory with commanding victories at second and third by Campitiello and Herb, respectively. Campitiello defeated Ayushi Sinha 6-0, 6-1 while Herb defeated Providence's Courtney Burek 6-1, 6-0.
Gregory won her match at No. 4 while McKeon was successful at No. 5 singles. Moritz won her sixth singles match by a score of 6-2, 6-1 over Ferry.
UConn (4-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) hosts Syracuse on Sunday at 11 a.m. and will continue BIG EAST action on March 31 when the Huskies host Rutgers at 2 p.m.
