QUEENS, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut women’s tennis team swept doubles in the 4-3 loss at St. John’s on Wednesday. In singles, the Huskies won at the No. 2 and No. 3 spot over the Red Storm.
“We played some of our best doubles of the season, to start the match off very strong,” head coach Glenn Marshall said. “The singles matches were a battle and they just won a couple of close matches today to sneak away with the win.”
BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) and Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) dominated the opposition in second singles, winning 8-1. With Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) back in the lineup, she and Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) won their second-straight match at No. 1. Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) earned an 8-3 decision in third doubles.
Cheung continues to find ways to win, claiming a two-set victory over her opponent in third singles. At No. 2, Campitiello took down Gabija Casunate in identical 6-4 sets. In first singles, LoRusso forced a third set, winning the second 6-4 before succumbing in the final, 7-5. Her partner in doubles, Herb faced a similar fate from the fourth singles spot. She won the second 6-4, but was unable to get a win in the third set, losing 6-2.
On Friday, the Huskies look to even their now 5-6 spring record with a 2 p.m. match against BIG EAST foe Seton Hall at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts. It is the first of three-straight home matches for women’s tennis and the first conference match of the weekend. UConn plays Cincinnati at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Storrs.
