STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team opened this weekend with a 5-2 win over Seton Hall on Friday afternoon. It is the first of two BIG EAST matches the Huskies will play at home, hosting Cincinnati on Saturday at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts.
The Huskies won the doubles point with victories at first and third doubles over the Pirates. Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won an 8-4 decision to get things started for UConn while Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) secured the doubles point with an 8-6 victory at No. 3.
In singles, UConn lost the two matches, earning wins first through third en route to the Huskies' second BIG EAST victory of the season.
"This is a very solid win for our team after a close match at St. John's," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "The team played very well and we are looking forward to Cincinnati."
Campitiello's hard fought three-set decision at No. 2 highlighted a successful day for UConn. In third singles, Cheung won her third-straight singles match with a 6-1, 6-4 decision. LoRusso earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 1. Moritz won in three sets in fifth singles, dropping the first and coming back in the final two sets.
Saturday's match against Cincinnati is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts.
