STORRS, Conn. - In its fourth BIG EAST women's tennis match of the season, the University of Connecticut Huskies fell 5-2 to the visiting Orange of Syracuse on Sunday. Freshman Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.) and junior Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) won UConn points from fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
The Huskies fall to 4-6 this spring with a 1-3 record in conference action thus far. UConn is 5-9 overall on the year.
"The team fought extremely hard today," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "This Syracuse team has been dominating BIG EAST opponents recently and we gave them a tough battle today."
Tough indeed as McKeon trailed with a first-set thus only to make a comeback to win her second singles match from the fifth spot this season.
Moritz maintained her unblemished record from the sixth singles spot with her 7-5, 6-4 victory over C.C. Jones.
The Orange garnered an early match lead, sweeping doubles play at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts. Junior Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and sophomore Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) lost for the first time this spring at No. 3 doubles. Herb and Gregory suffered an 8-2 loss to Alessonda Parra and Christina Tan.
UConn hosts Rutgers on Wednesday for its second-consecutive BIG EAST match of the season. The Huskies match against the Scarlet Knights is set to begin at 2 p.m. in Storrs.
