JERSEY CITY N.J. - UConn senior Jennifer Learmonth (Elgin, S.C.) and sophomore Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia) both earned victories in singles and doubles play to lead the Huskies to a 4-3 win over Seton Hall on Friday afternoon. The win improves the Huskies to 5-9 on the season as they enter a stretch of three of their final five games on their home court.
Learmonth along with classmate Marie Gargulio (Weston, Conn.) clinched the doubles point for UConn, fighting their way back from down 7-4 in their match with Anna Guryanova and Hannah Liljekvist at #3 to earn a win in a tie break. The duo improved to 5-2 as a doubles team this spring with an 8-7 (4) victory, giving UConn a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Learmonth notched her team-leading 18th doubles victory on the season.
Stosljevic and senior Lucy Nutting (Wilmington, Del.) set the Huskies up to grab the doubles point thanks to a convincing 8-1 victory over Rocio Portela and Chloe Sher in the #1 slot.
The two teams split the six singles matches with the team result coming down to Learmonth's match with Alex Landert at #6. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Learmonth stormed back and posted 6-2 and 6-1 wins to take the match and seal the Husky victory.
Stosljevic notched her seventh win in her last 10 matches thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sher at #1. She improved to 16-10 overall on the season. Junior Maxene Weinberg (Marietta, Ga.) earned the other UConn singles victory, defeating Rocio Portela at #3, 6-2 and 6-0.
"The team battled at every position and stepped up for a great victory today," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "Srna Stoslejvic played great and was a double winner in singles and doubles today beating last week's Big East player of the Week (Chloe Sher). A tremendous and exciting win for our program."
The Huskies are back at home on Saturday afternoon when they play host to Temple in an American Athletic Conference match-up. The match has been moved to the indoor courts at the East Hartford Tennis Club at 1:00 pm.
