VILLANOVA, Pa. - The UConn women's tennis team notched their fifth-straight victory on Sunday afternoon, blanking Villanova on the road, 7-0. The Huskies improved to 12-7 and won their fifth match on the year when blanking an opponent.
"We had a nice win today at Villanova," commented head coach Glenn Marshall. "We didn't have a lot of time to recover from the long Temple match on Saturday night but we bounced back and picked up a win on a chilly and windy afternoon. We've now won five-straight and the team is feeling very confident as we head down the stretch of the season."
FreshmanYelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) won her sixth-straight while sophomore Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) and freshman Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) won their fifth-straight singles wins and all three are 7-3 over their last 10 matches. Flanagan and Walker joined junior Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia) in winning 20 singles matches on the year. Flanagan improved to 20-8 while Walker is now 20-10. Pletnyeva is now 11-5 this spring.
Stosljevic improved to a team-best 21-8 on the year leading the sweep in singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win at #1 over Tori Smyth. Sophomore Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) picked-up her 19th win on the season with a three-set win at #2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 over Samantha Schafer.
Pletnyeva won 6-1 and 6-2 at #3 over Alexandra Krogius and Walker won 6-3, 6-2 over Paulina Bajet at #4. Freshman Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) won her fourth-straight singles match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Kate Pettee at #5. Flanagan closed out the singles sweep with a 6-2 and 6-1 win over Linley Busby at #6.
In doubles, the team of Stosljevic and senior Maxene Weinberg (Marietta, Ga.) improved to a team-best 11-6 with an 8-0 win at #1 over Pettee and Schafer. Alderman and Zaki won at #2, 8-3 over Krogius and Smyth and Pletnyeva and senior Jenise Vargas (Pasadena, Calif.) won at #3, 8-3 over Busby and Bajet.
The Huskies will play host to Boston University on Thursday, April 2nd in their only action this week.
