Doubles Success Instrumental in 4-3 Women's Tennis Victory at Seton Hall

April 2, 2010

ORANGE, N.J. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team earned its second BIG EAST win of the season with a 4-3 victory at Seton Hall on Friday. The Huskies surpassed the Pirates by winning the doubles point, sweeping that portion of the match. UConn is now 5-6 this spring with a 2-4 record in BIG EAST action thus far.

"This was definitely our best doubles play of the spring season," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "The team came out with great energy and focus, and it turned out to be the determining factor of the match."

Senior Kelly LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) and junior Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) surpassed Denise Liebschner and Belfin Sunbul in the first doubles match to get things started for the Huskies. LoRusso and Mortiz won their march 8-1.

Senior Alli Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.) followed suit with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 while the duo of junior Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and sophomore Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) took down their Seton Hall foe, 8-4 at No. 3.

Campitiello, Gregory and McKeon would all go on to win their singles matches while the Pirates claimed victories in both three set decisions on Friday.

LoRusso fell to Liebschner in the top singles spot while Moritz was unable to hold on after winning the first set against Michelle Weerasinghe.

Campitiello defeated Elizabeth Verow in straight 6-1 sets for her fifth victory in second singles this season. Gregory and McKeon both won their respective singles matches with 6-1, 6-4 decisions. Gregory evened her record at No. 4 singles with the win (2-2) while McKeon is now 3-2.

The Huskies return to the road for the next to BIG EAST matches this season with trips to Georgetown and Villanova on April 10 and 11, respectively. UConn will take on both conference foe starting at 11 a.m. on each day. SINGLES
