MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis dropped its first BIG EAST match of the weekend against Pittsburgh on Saturday. Held without a single point, the Huskies battled to three-sets in four singles matches and fell in a tiebreaker in No. 2 doubles.
BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) fought for a 7-5 victory in the first set of her third singles match. Cheung struggled in the second, losing 6-1 as Minh Evans forced a decisive third set. The Panther took the win with a 10-8 decision in the final.
It was similar story at No. 4 singles as Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won the first set 6-4, before losing the final two, falling 6-2, 6-3. Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) lost the first of her three-set battle, forcing a third with a 6-1 win in the second. She lost after falling 10-4 in the final set.
Shannon Benic forced a third set by defeating Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) 6-3 in the second set. Gregory had won the first before ultimately falling 11-9 in the third from the sixth singles spot.
The day got of to a rocky start for Connecticut after being swept in doubles despite the efforts of Cheung and Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) in second singles. The consistent Husky pair fell 8-7 (7).
Competition for UConn continues in Morgantown, W.Va. as the Huskies take on their hosts West Virginia on Sunday.
