VILLANOVA, Pa. - The UConn women's tennis team swept the Villanova Wildcats, 7-0 on Sunday to complete a perfect weekend on the road in dual match play. The win improves the Huskies to 7-11 on the season.
The Huskies won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches on the day. "We finished off a solid weekend with a good win over Villanova today," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "The team played very focused and determined today and we really never let them get any momentum started."
Freshmen Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kan.) each earned singles wins blanking their oppoenents. Alderman won at #2 over Linley Busby, 6-0 and 6-0, while Flanagan won her #6 match with Anne Cognetti, 6-0 and 6-0 as well.
Senior Jennifer Learmonth (Elgin, S.C.) won her #5 singles match with Hayley Sanzone, 6-2 and 6-1 to pick-up her 10th singles win of the season becoming the fifth Husky to win double digit matches this season. Sophomore Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia) notched her 19th victory beating Mikelle Mancini, 6-1 and 6-1. Junior Maxene Weinberg (Marietta, Ga.) posted a 6-0 and 6-1 win over Connor Brewer at #3 while senior Lucy Nutting (Wilmington, Del.) won at #4, 7-5 and 6-0 over Kate Pettee, 7-5 and 6-0.
In doubles play, Stosljevic and Nutting teamed up for an 8-3 win at #1 over Mancini and Tori Smith, their 10th victory as a team. Alderman and Weinberg won 8-3 over Busby and Pettee at #2, their fourth-straight victory. Learmonth and senior Marie Gargiulo (Weston, Conn.) won 8-3 at #3 over Brewer and Cognetti, their 19th and 17th doubles victories, respectively.
The Huskies will close out their spring dual match slate on Saturday, April 12th playing host to the Marist Red Foxes on the UConn Tennis Courts.
