Women's Tennis Falls to St. John's 7-0

QUEENS, N.Y. - The UConn women's tennis fell to St. John's 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon in BIG EAST Conference action at The Courts at St. John's in Queens, N.Y.

Senior Katie Moritz and freshman Marie Gargiulo were the only victors from the UConn program as they defeated Ece Firat and Joanna Zwirbulis 8-4 in No. 3 doubles' play.

St. John's (8-7, 3-2 BIG EAST) swept singles competition but not without a fight as UConn's Alexa Gregory won her first set in No. 3 singles over St. John's Firat. Gregory won the first set 6-1 before falling to Firat in two close sets, losing 6-4 and 6-3.

Abby McKeon also battled with St. John's Diamond Adams, falling to the Red Storm freshman in No. 5 singles. Adams edged McKeon 7-5 in the first set of the match before McKeon surged back, winning the second set 6-4. Adams then took the match with a 6-1 win in the final set.

Nakita Austin edged UConn freshman Lucy Nutting in No. 6 singles as Austin won the tiebreaker. Nutting fell to Austin 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6).

With the doubles' point tied at 1-1 after Moritz and Gargiulo won their match, St. John's Nevena Selakovic and Adams were able to slip past UConn's Jennifer Learmonth and Emily Herb 8-6 to take the doubles' point.

Learmonth lost in No. 1 singles to Selakovic 6-0, 6-1, while Herb fell in No. 2 singles 7-5, 6-1 to Zwirbulis. In No. 4 singles, Lauren Wilmarth dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to the Red Storm's Jenny Yonkus.



The Huskies move to 5-7 on the year and 1-3 in the BIG EAST Conference. They will return to action on Friday, April 8 as they host Marquette in league play in Storrs, Conn. beginning at noon.
