PISCATAWAY, N.J. - It was disappointing day for the University of Connecticut women's tennis team on Wednesday, losing a 7-0 match to BIG EAST foe Rutgers. The Huskies forced three-set matches on three separate occasions, but were unable to overcome the Scarlet Knights. This was Rutgers' seventh-straight win of the season.
Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) came out on the bitter end of a three-set match at No. 2 singles. Campitiello lost the final set 12-10. BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.), in third singles, suffered the same after losing the first set the senior captain recovered to take the second 6-4. Rutgers' Jennifer Holzberg was able to get by with a 10-7 win in the final.
In sixth singles, Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) battled to three sets and was the third Connecticut player to fall in a tiebreaker in the third set, losing 10-4 in the final.
"This was another tough conference match for us," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "We took three of the singles matches to three sets, but were unable to convert on any of them. That has been our difficulty in the last several BIG EAST matches. I hope we can turn things around against Villanova on Saturday."
Both the men's and women's tennis teams will be in action on the University of Connecticut tennis courts as the Huskies host Villanova at Noon on Saturday.
