STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team fell to West Virginia 5-2 in BIG EAST Conference play on Sunday afternoon.
After the Mountaineers swept doubles' play, UConn battled back to win two of the six singles' matches. Jennifer Learmonth led the way winning the No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 showing against WVU's Melis Tanik.
Freshman Lucy Nutting won No. 6 singles as she defeated Anna Rodionova 6-1, 7-6. Mary Chupa and Emily Mathis won the No. 1 doubles over UConn's Learmonth and Emily Herb, while Alexa Gregory and Abby McKeon fell in No. 2 doubles to WVU's Veronica Cardenas and Liv Pettersson.Herb was edged in No. 2 singles, falling to Mathis 6-3, 6-7, 10-8.
Gregory lost her singles' match in three sets, falling to Mary Chupa 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Gregory lost the first set but battled back to win the second set 6-1. She fell in the close third set 6-4 after battling until the end.
Lauren Wilmarth also battled in her singles' match in the No. 5 spot as she forced a three-set match as well. Wilmarth lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 to the Mountaineers' Ashley Pilsbury.
The UConn women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, April 13 in Piscataway, N.J. The Huskies will take on Rutgers beginning at 1:00 p.m. in BIG EAST Conference tennis action.
