VILLANOVA, Pa. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team registered its second shutout victory of the spring and first over a BIG EAST opponent with a 7-0 win at Villanova on Sunday. The Huskies swept the Wildcats to improve to 3-5 in conference with a 6-8 spring record. Sophomores Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) captured a 5-1 spring record at No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 decision.
Also finding success in doubles were the Connecticut duos of senior Kelly LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) and junior Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and senior Alli Campitiello (State Island, N.Y.) and freshman Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass). Both won their respective doubles matches at first and second by 8-4 margins.
Campitiello denied Allison Solberg a single point in the opening set of her two-set victory at No. 2. LoRusso translated her early success in doubles into a singles win as well.
McKeon took Kristin Goddberg in identical 6-1 sets to move to 5-2 in fifth singles this spring. Moritz continued her steady hand at No. 6 singles en route to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Wildcats.
Herb battled to a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Alexandra Harding as the Huskies went on to the sweep.
UConn hosts its final two BIG EAST opponents with a 3 p.m. match against St. John's on April 16 followed by a 10 a.m. contest against Pittsburgh on April 18. Both are scheduled to take place at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts.
